Things To Do In South Bend
(And the Surrounding Area)
First off, here are two sites with lots of information on South Bend and things to do here:
the michiana pages website
Want to get away from the downtown area? Here are some suggestions:
The world's largest music center is located right here in little old South Bend. Just Take a short journey west of town. The Woodwind and the Brasswind is a musicians heaven.
Just outside the downtown area there are some nice attractions such as the Potawatomi Zoo (500 S. Greenlawn Ave. 219-235-9800.)
Want to venture up north a bit? Why Not!
One of the most famous parts of South Bend is the University of Notre Dame (it certantly is Jim's favorite part... at least when their football team is doing well.) On campus is the bookstore where you can shop to your delight. There is also the Snite Museum of Art. The log chapel (where Jim and Rose Mary were married) is on campus, along with the Sacred Heart Church.
If going outside of the South Bend area attracts you, here is your section.
If staying closer to the reunion is your forte, here are some great places on our side of town:
E-Mail Time!
I'm sure that after all this information, you have questions. If that is the case, just drop us a line! Jim's e-mail is [email protected].
Well, that's it for now folks! Hope to see all of you on July 28th!

and the things to do in South Bend site.
Now on to the actual attractions:
One of the best parts of living here has to be the South Bend Chocolate Factory and it's Chocolate Cafe Downtown (right next to the College Football Hall of Fame.)
The College Football Hall Of Fame Is a great attraction for the football fan.
While you're downtown, take the kids to the Healthworks Museum. This has fun activities all about good health for the younger crowd.
The East Race is a very pretty walk or a whitewater adventure (as close as South Bend can come to that) depending on how adventurous you are.
If history is more your speed, the Northern Indiana Center for History is a great stop. In the Beautiful Oliver mansion, you can't go wrong.
The Kidsfirst Museum is located within the Northern Indiana Center for History (808 W. Washington: 219-235-9664)
While you're in a museum mood, stop at the Studebaker National Museum and catch many of the cars of the past. This too is located downtown.
The South Bend Regional Museum of Art is a great downtown stop as well. It is located next to the east race in the Century Center .
If this is not exciting enough for you, while downtown catch a South Bend Silverhawks game at the Cove.
The Mole Hole is a great little botique. It is located downtown at 121 S. Niles Ave. (219) 232-8488 or (800) 231-8488.
Right next to the zoo are the Morris Conservatory and the Mussel-Ellison Tropical Gardens. They are located at 2105 Mishawaka Ave. (219) 235-9442.
While you are in the campus area, visit the Campus Shoppes, The Irish Import shop (1643 Edison Rd. 219-243-1400) and Bombay Botique (1635 Edison Rd. 219-271-8865.)
Go a little further north, and you have hit the shopping jackpot. You can go up and down Grape road and find all kinds of strip malls and shops. There is also University Park mall at the corner of Grape Rd. and State Rd. 3
While you are in Mishawaka (shopping on Grape Road, of course), take a break and visit the Shiojiri Niwa Japanese Gardens (1000 E. Mishawaka Ave. 219-258-1664).
Amish Acres is a great shopping area with quite a few eats.
Das Dutchman Essenhaus (a restaurant/shop) is one of the best places to eat. Their family style servings are perfect, and the chicken is amazing!
While you're in that amish mood, Borkholder Dutch Village is another great place to shop.
If that is still not enough Amish-ness for you, Shipshewana, Indiana has lots of shopping. Most of the shops are located on Main street.
If the amish are not your style, than outlet shopping might be. Located in Michigan City, Indiana (a 45 minute drive from South Bend), the Lighthouse Outlet Mall is a McNulty women favorite.
In Goshen, Indiana (a short drive from South Bend) is the Old Bag Factory. This is where, in the 1800's, the Goshen Trolly would start from. Now it is a great place to shop.
While in Granger, take a walk on the wild side, and say no to conformity. Stay a while at Sunnyhaven Recreational Park (or as the rest of us like to call it, the NUDIE colony.) The place is for real, but the suggestion is a joke.
A very short drive from South Bend is the Potato Creek State Park. Go there when you're so sick of the rest of us that you're willing to brave nature and camp out. It's also a very nice day stop for fun and recreation.
Scottsdale mall is the south side's mall. Though not as big as University Park, it is still a nice place to shop. It is located on the corner of Miami St. and Ireland Rd.
Two shops that are right down the road from our house are Chickadees (5613 US 31 South 219-291-9840) and Camelot Water Gardens (2624 South Michigan St. 219-233-1766). Rose Mary and Kelly love these shops
